Metadata preparation and enrichment¶
Of enormous importance for the archiving, provision and publication of data is the correct recording of basic metadata of a data set. We have already discussed the concept of metadata here.
This section will focus on how the metadata must be prepared in order to archive a dataset in the DMP, publish it, and obtain a DOI for sustainable referencing. We distinguish here between required and recommended metadata.
Mandatory metadata¶
For archiving and DOI registration several metadata are mandatory. For archiving the metadata is specified here. The mandatory data for DOI registration is presented here.
Recommended metadata¶
In this section we will present some of the metadata variables that is recommended and available via DMP.
Subjects¶
Keywords or Subjects that describe the content of the dataset, aiding in search and discovery.
Description¶
A brief summary or abstract outlining the purpose, scope, and key characteristics of the dataset.
Type of data, data quality and status¶
Details about the type of data, data quality and status, and measures taken to ensure accuracy.
Data format¶
The format(s) in which the data is provided (e.g., CSV, HDF5, NetCDF, etc.).
Source/Origin¶
If applicable, information about the source(s) from which the data was obtained.
References to related data¶
References to any publications associated with the dataset.
Citation note¶
Guidance on how to cite the dataset, including DOI (Digital Object Identifier) if available.
Language¶
Used language(s) in the data set.
Version¶
A version number or identifier to track changes and updates to the dataset.
License¶
Information about the usage rights and licensing terms for the dataset.
Spatial and temporal coverage¶
Geographic and temporal information indicating the extent and time period covered by the dataset.
Spatial coverage:
Metadata for spatial coverage is not enabled by default. You enable it by adding the GeoCore Standard to the set of metadata:
GeoCore Descriptions:can be added using the description field if necessary.
Temporal coverage:
For temporal and other aspects of coverage a separate field exists just underneath the description field:
Other metadata¶
For other metedata like methods and instruments, variables/parameters, units of measurement for these parameters, acknowledgments, etc. no specific metadata fields exist in DMP. They can be added using the description field if necessary.
Metadata preparation¶
Here are some practical steps to clean and enhance your metadata:
- Standardize formats: Ensure that your metadata follows a standardized format. This includes consistent date formats, units of measurement, and any other relevant conventions.
- Correct Typos and errors: Review your metadata for typos, spelling errors, and inaccuracies. Use spell-check tools and carefully proofread to catch any mistakes.
- Fill in missing information: Check for missing or incomplete information in your metadata. If possible, fill in the gaps with accurate and relevant data.
- Update dates and timestamps: If your metadata includes timestamps or dates, make sure they are accurate and reflect the latest updates to the dataset.
- Ensure accessibility: Make sure that your metadata is easily accessible and understandable by others who may use or analyze the underlying dataset.
- Use speaking title: Make sure that the title is descriptive and can stand for itself.
