National Research Data Infrastructure Germany (NFDI)

Relevant data should be made available according to the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable). In order to coordinate the activities for the establishment of a National Research Data Infrastructure, the non-profit association National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) e.V. was founded in 2020 with headquarters in Karlsruhe. In the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), data resources from science and research are systematically made accessible, networked and made usable in a sustainable and qualitative manner for the entire German science system. The NFDI is intended to create a permanent digital repository of knowledge as an indispensable prerequisite for new research questions, findings and innovations. NFDI includes 26 consortia as well as the association of consortia, called Base4NFDI. These consortia were selected in a science-led process managed by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The consortia cover a wide range of scientific disciplines: from cultural sciences, social sciences, humanities and engineering to life sciences and natural sciences.

Of the consortia listed below, the UFZ is represented in the following: NFDI4Biodiversity, NFDI4Chem, NFDI4Earth, NFDI4Microbiota, NFDI4BIOIMAGE, FAIRagro and NFDI4Objects. More information about UFZ activities in the NFDI can be found at the intranet.

The consortia also collaborate across the boundaries of their disciplines. Many topics are relevant to all or several consortia. These cross-cutting topics are jointly identified and worked on in sections, i.e. thematic divisions. Since October 2021, association members have been working together in five sections:
