6. Creating Links between Online Resources and Metadata Records¶
In general, it is possible to link metadata records both with online resources and with other records. Given the appropriate privileges both are carried out in the right sidebar of a records editor view. There you see the “Associated resources“ with the “Add”-button within the right sidebar (→18).
The amount of protocols selectable for online resources are extensive, and covers for example all kinds of web services and databases as well as some proprietary formats (→19; →6.1).
In GeoNetwork the relationship between records may be of one of the following kinds: Parent, service, or source record, as well as feature catalog or other resource (→18; →6.2).
The main types of associating records with other records or resources are summarized by the following figure (→F2):
6.1 Linking Online Resources¶
Online resources (services, raster data, text files, et cetera) can be associated with a record using the option “Link an online resource” via the drop-down menu “Add” (→18). Following this, the kind and URL of the corresponding resource are queried by a dialog box (→19).
As soon as the linkage to a resource is set up it is displayed in a records standard view below abstract and download options (→20).
6.2 Linking Metadata Records Among Each Other¶
A linkage to other metadata records is carried out by defining the corresponding relationship:
- “Link to parent“: Linkage to a superior record, which contain overarching information summarizing various similar minor records
- “Link to service“: Linkage to a service containing the respective records dataset
- “Link to source dataset“: Linkage to records whose datasets constitute the source of the respective records dataset
- “Link to feature catalog“: Linkage to a collection of information concerning a dataset, e. g. tables, attributes, definitions, or values (PDF or ISO19110 feature catalog as stand-alone record)
- “Link to other resources“: Linkage to another record by defining their respective relationship(→21)
6.3 Parent-Children Relationships Between Records¶
In order to highlight close relationships between several records of the same kind, GeoNetwork offers the possibility to designate a parent record for them. This parent may contain information equally valid for all child records whereas diverging information are described in every single child record separately.
In order to do this a child record can be assigned a parent record by using the respective button in the drop-down menu “Add“ (→18).
The other way round, the children of an existing record may be created from within the editor board by selecting the respective button on the right side of the records line (→22). In doing so the content of the original record is duplicated and completed by a linkage to the respective parent.
As a result the link to the parent record is displayed as “Associated resource” in the child records standard view (→23)
